                      SIX MILLION ENERGY SUPPLY CUSTOMERS



The energy supply business of Scottish and Southern Energy plc ('SSE') now has
six million customers for the first time. SSE, which markets electricity and gas
as Southern Electric, SWALEC, Scottish Hydro Electric and Atlantic, has gained
almost 1.5 million customers since the start of 2002.



Ian Marchant, Chief Executive of SSE, said:



'I believe that our combination of best-in-class customer service and the value
of our brands means we will continue to gain customers in the future. It also
remains important, however, to maximise the value to be derived from the
enlarged customer base which we have built up over the last three years. With
that aim in mind, our new energy services unit has been set up to consolidate
and market the services we provide to customers 'beyond the meter'.'
