                         APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY CHAIRMAN

Sir Robert Smith has been appointed Deputy Chairman of Scottish and Southern
Energy plc, and becomes senior independent Director with effect from 1 November
2003. He succeeds Ian Grant, whose retirement from the Board was announced in
September. Sir Robert joined the Board of SSE in June 2003.
