APPOINTMENT OF NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

 

Dame Angela Strank has been appointed as a non-Executive Director of SSE plc.  She will take up her Board appointment on 1 May 2020 and will also join SSE's Safety, Health and Environment Advisory Committee.

 

A PhD geologist by background, Angela is currently Head of Downstream Technology and Group Chief Scientist at BP Plc, but plans to retire from BP at the end of this year.  Since joining BP in 1982 Angela has held leadership roles in technology, commercial and business development in a variety of countries.  She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Royal Society.  In 2010, Angela won the Science and Technology prize at the First Women Awards 2010 and is recognised for her work in encouraging women into STEM careers. Angela was awarded a Damehood in 2017 for services to the energy industry and for pioneering women in STEM careers.

Since 2014, Angela has been an independent non-Executive Director on the Board of Severn Trent giving her valuable experience in an economically-regulated business.  As announced in February, she will also join the Board of Rolls Royce as a non-Executive Director in May 2020.

 

The appointment is the result of a comprehensive search and selection process.  When Angela takes up her appointment, the Board of SSE plc will comprise the Chairman, three Executive Directors and seven non-Executive Directors; and will comprise seven men and four women.

 

Each Director of SSE plc is subject to annual re-appointment and Angela's appointment to the Board will be the subject of a resolution at the company's next Annual General Meeting.
