Redemption of Special Share in Scottish and Southern Energy plc

Scottish and Southern Energy welcomes the Government's announcement today that
it is to redeem its £1 Special Share in Scottish and Southern Energy. The
consent of the holder of the Special Share is required, in terms of the
Company's Articles of Association, for any person to hold more than 15% of the
shares of the Company.

The Company will now take steps to remove the 15% limit on shareholdings by
seeking to amend its Articles of Association at its AGM to be held on 29 July
2004.
