KNOWSLEY STREET LIGHTING AND TRAFFIC SIGNS PFI

SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc), through its wholly-owned subsidiary Tay Valley Lighting (Knowsley) Ltd  ("TVL")  has been awarded a 25-year contract, under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI), by Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council.  The contract is for the maintenance of over 24,000 lighting columns, traffic bollards and traffic signs in the borough and the replacement of more than 70% of these during the initial four year investment period.   TVL was appointed preferred bidder in February 2011.

Under a sub-contract, all work will be carried out by SSE Contracting, which will also install its innovative 'Mayflower' Central Management System technology on all illuminated apparatus. This technology enables variable light control, fault detection and energy consumption measurement to be undertaken from a central location, allowing the local authority to manage lighting levels and therefore energy consumption, throughout the contract.

The contract commences in August 2011 after a mobilisation period.

This latest contract takes the number of local authorities with which SSE has long-term street lighting replacement and maintenance PFI contracts to 12 and the number of lighting units covered by such contracts to over 600,000.

Colin Hood, Chief Operating Officer of SSE, said:

"SSE is well established as the UK's leading street lighting contractor, and this latest contract will build on that. The Knowsley Street Lighting PFI will create safer and improved lighting for the people of Knowsley, and we will work hard to make sure a high standard of service and delivery."
