Scottish and Southern Energy plc has today commenced market purchases of
shares under the authority granted at the last Annual General Meeting.  This
authority allows market purchases of up to 87,571,471 shares, representing
approximately 10 per cent of the issued share capital of the Company.

Scottish and Southern Energy plc has today acquired for cancellation 600,000
of its 50p ordinary shares at a price of 499.1666p per ordinary share.
