SCOTTISH AND SOUTHERN ENERGY PLC
WAVE AND TIDAL ENERGY DEVELOPMENT
SSE Renewables, the renewable energy development division of SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc) has been awarded exclusive rights to develop 400MW of wave and tidal energy in Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters and a further 400MW with its partners, Aquamarine and OpenHydro.
The award is part of the world's first commercial leasing programme for wave and tidal energy generation projects, undertaken by The Crown Estate.
The four sites are: Costa Head (wave); Westray South (tidal stream); Brough Head (wave, in partnership with Aquamarine); and Cantick Head (tidal stream, in partnership with OpenHydro).
Over the next few years, SSE and its partners will be working closely with The Crown Estate and other stakeholders before bringing forward applications to construct the wave and tidal energy developments. The vast majority of construction work is not expected to begin until after 2015.
Paul Dowling, Chief Executive of SSE Renewables, said:
"As the leading generator of renewable energy in the UK, SSE is committed to building on its existing renewable portfolio by developing viable wave and tidal sites using industry-leading marine technologies. We look forward to working closely with statutory bodies, local communities and the Crown Estate to take forward this exciting opportunity."
