has announced its new business figures for the three months to 31 March 2000.

FIRST QUARTER NEW BUSINESS FROM
THE J. ROTHSCHILD PARTNERSHIP UP 43%
* Sales through the Group's sole UK marketing arm, The J. Rothschild
Partnership rose 43% during the three months ended 31 March 2000.

* Total Group funds under management were £5.1bn an increase of 10% since
the beginning of the year.
Mike Wilson, Group Chief Executive, commented:
'We are delighted with these results, which follow a 25% increase in new
business during the second half of last year. Productivity per Partner
increased substantially during the quarter.'

Notes
St.James's Place Capital plc, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange,
is the ultimate holding company of the companies comprising the J. Rothschild
Assurance Group.
1. 'International distribution', having been discontinued during 1999 after
Paul Bradshaw was appointed Chief Executive, is in the course of being
relaunched in Italy.
2. 'Miscellaneous distribution' represents business which comes to the group
from sources other than The J. Rothschild Partnership or its international
distribution.
3. 'Total New Business' is calculated following the convention in the life
assurance industry, by adding together new regular premiums and one-tenth
of single premiums.
