SMG plc Chairman's AGM Statement
At the Annual General Meeting of SMG plc, held today (Friday, 6 June), Chairman,
Don Cruickshank, said:
'As we stated in our preliminary results announcement in March, the recovery had
displayed signs of having started in the second half of last year. This has
stalled in the early part of 2003, and while we have seen some pockets of
revenue growth, the first five months of 2003 lead me to be cautious about the
remainder of the year.
The war in Iraq has suppressed advertising markets and we saw some tactical
spend pushed into the second quarter of the year. However, SMG's presence in a
number of advertising sectors has resulted in the Group benefiting from some
bright spots in the outdoor and cinema markets. Against this background, while
television and radio remain softer, we hope to see some improvement in trading
in the second half of the year.
The outlook remains uncertain on the timing of a full recovery and we continue
to manage our business on the basis that any material recovery in advertising
markets will not occur before 2004. Nonetheless, we believe there is
considerable scope for the Group to continue to develop.'
