Scottish Media Group Increases GMTV Stake to 25%
Scottish Media Group plc ('SMG') announces today (4 January 2000) that it has
increased its shareholding in the national breakfast television station, GMTV,
by 5.0% to 25.0%.
The shares have been purchased from Guardian Media Group plc for a cash
consideration of £5.6m, with a further £0.5m being assumed in loan stock.
The additional investment is expected to be earnings enhancing in the current
financial year.
Two other GMTV shareholders - Carlton Communications plc ('Carlton') and
Granada Group PLC ('Granada') - have also each increased their shareholding by
5.0%. Ownership of GMTV is now shared equally between SMG, Carlton, Granada
and The Walt Disney Company Limited.
Commenting on the decision to strengthen SMG's position in GMTV, Andrew
Flanagan, chief executive, said:
'GMTV is both a household name and a successful national broadcaster whose
financial prospects have improved significantly since its recent licence
renewal. We look forward to working even more closely with the team at GMTV,
capitalising on the opportunities which exist for both organisations at this
exciting time in the development of broadcast television.'
