STV BIDS FOR LOCAL TV LICENCES IN
ABERDEEN, AYR AND DUNDEE
24th October 2014
STV today (24th October 2014) confirmed it has submitted applications to Ofcom to deliver local TV in Aberdeen, Ayr and Dundee.
The applications have been submitted in partnership with Robert Gordon University and North East Scotland College in Aberdeen, the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) in Ayr, and Abertay University and Dundee and Angus College in Dundee.
STV launched Scotland's first local TV station in Glasgow, delivered in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University, on Monday 2nd June 2014. STV Glasgow reaches a monthly audience of over 500,000 in Glasgow and the west, with 60% of the transmission area tuning in since launch.
STV Edinburgh will launch in early January 2015 in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University.
STV's applications for Aberdeen, Ayr and Dundee propose to deliver local news and current affairs content. Working in partnership with the further education colleges and universities will provide media students with the opportunity to learn and train in a live TV environment. The education partners will be represented on the respective boards of each local TV service should the applications be successful.
Bobby Hain, director of channels at STV, said: "We have demonstrated our ability to engage with local communities and deliver relevant, local content across STV's multi-platforms, including the current STV Glasgow licence and our Apps serving Scotland's largest cities.
"STV believes that, working closely with our education partners, we can successfully deliver compelling services in these three additional areas across the 12 year licence."
STV Glasgow currently broadcasts on Freeview channel 23, Sky channel 117 and Virgin channel 159 and are available to watch live on the STV Player.
