Virgin Radio Secures Digital Carriage for London Service
Scottish Media Group plc ('SMG') announces today (Friday, 7 April) that the
decision of the Radio Authority to award the second London digital radio
multiplex licence to Switchdigital will guarantee carriage for Virgin Radio's
new bespoke digital radio service to London listeners.
In addition, SMG confirms that its involvement in Switchdigital will result in
the automatic rollover of Virgin Radio's London FM licence for a further eight
years from 2003. Through its involvement in the national commercial digital
radio multiplex, Digital One, Virgin Radio's national AM licence had
previously been guaranteed automatic renewal.
Virgin Radio, which was acquired by SMG in March as part of Ginger Media
Group, has been part of the Switchdigital consortium since its inception and
is a 10% shareholder. Virgin Radio will provide a 'Classic Soul' programme
service on the London digital multiplex, expected to be on air in June 2000.
Andrew Flanagan, SMG's Chief Executive, said:
'Virgin Radio is fully committed to a digital future and, through our
participation in the new London multiplex, we intend to stay at the forefront
of digital radio in the UK.'
