Appointments to the Clinical Advisory Board

Surgical Innovations Group plc (AIM: SUN), a designer and manufacturer of creative solutions for minimally invasive surgery ('MIS'), announces the appointment of Colorectal consultant surgeon John Griffith and Neurosurgeon Jake Timothy to its Clinical Advisory Board ('CAB') with immediate effect.

John Griffith, BM, BS, FRCS, is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon specialising in colorectal surgery including inflammatory bowel disease and functional disorders, as well as laparoscopic general surgical procedures including cholecystectomy and hernia operations. He graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1985 and completed his higher surgical training under the tutelage of some of the country's leading laparoscopic surgeons. John was awarded the status of National Trainer in laparoscopic colorectal surgery in 2008. Since this point he has performed the second highest number of training episodes on the LAPCO programme. As a dedicated trainer in his field he often runs training courses in colorectal and hernia surgery and is one of the faculties of LAPCO Training. He is also the national clinical adviser for colorectal cancer to NHS improvements and has pioneered survivorship work both at a local and national level. John is keen to work with the SI design team to develop and advance the current products further to the particular needs of colorectal surgery.

Jake Timothy, MBBS, MD, FRCS (Eng & SN), is a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Spine Surgeon specialising in the management of head trauma and the development of spinal surgery at Leeds General Infirmary. Trained at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School he moved up to Leeds in 1996. He developed a head injury clinic with links to secondary care and charitable organisations and organised several national conferences concerning Neurotrauma, both independently and in conjunction with Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN). Jake was a National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) advisor on interspinous process distracters (X-stop) and minimally invasive XLIF procedure and an international figure regarding the training of surgeons. He has introduced many new techniques to the department with a focus on MIS.

Graham Bowland, Chief Executive Officer for Surgical Innovation, said: "We are delighted to welcome both John and Jake to the CAB.  John's expertise in colorectal surgery will help us increase our awareness in this area and he is already liaising closely with our design team to develop new technologies for this specialism. Jake will be the first spinal surgeon to join SI's CAB and reinforces our strategy to transfer our technology into new areas of the body. Our CAB now consists of 11 extremely experienced surgeons with differing fields of speciality allowing SI to develop products to suit a broad range of clinical disciplines."
