Publication of Industry Research Report
86% of the UK population supports CCTV in public spaces
Synectics plc (AIM: SNX), a leader in the design, integration, control and management of advanced surveillance technology and networked security systems, announces today the publication of an industry research report, entitled CCTV: Perceptions and Beliefs. The report has been compiled independently by ICM Research, the consumer research specialist, on behalf of Synectics and CCTV User Group, the best-practice industry body.
The research report revealed the majority of residents in the UK are in support of the use of CCTV, with 86% of those surveyed in favour of the use of the technology in public spaces. The report also showed most people perceive CCTV to be preventive, and 71% of those surveyed said CCTV should be used to enable a more immediate police response to help catch criminals.
The report also revealed that support is strong for using CCTV forensically as an investigative tool, rather than purely as visual support material.
John Shepherd, Chief Executive of Synectics, commented: "This research provides a fascinating insight into the public's attitude towards CCTV and one which is at odds with the popular misconception that people are opposed to the use of public space surveillance.
"On the contrary, it is clear there is broad support for the use of CCTV in public spaces and that people feel there is a duty for local authorities to consider it a priority in making people feel safe and secure."
The full findings from the research will be presented at the CCTV User Group Annual Conference, taking place today. To view a copy of the report, visit www.synecticsglobal.com/research.
