Tate & Lyle: Closure date to sell Western Sugar extended to 30 June 2001

Tate & Lyle PLC ('Tate & Lyle') announces that while negotiations with the
Rocky Mountain Sugar Growers Co-operative ('RMSGC') regarding its acquisition
of the Western Sugar Company ('Western') have been progressing,
it has been informed that RMSGC has experienced delays in securing bank
funding. Consequently, Tate & Lyle and RMSGC have agreed to extend the closing
date to 30 June 2001. Tate & Lyle will continue to assist RMSGC to complete
this purchase on a timely basis. A further announcement will be made when
appropriate.
