Tate & Lyle was informed on 22 December 2000 that Newstarch Investments SA
(Newstarch), a wholly owned subsidiary of Compagnie Industrielle et Financiere
des Produits Amylaces SA (CIP), has acquired an interest in 48,083,913
Ordinary shares in Tate & Lyle PLC which is 9.98 per cent. of the relevant
share capital.  

These shares will be registered in Newstarch's name.  The current registered
holders of these shares are CIP (24,083,913 shares) and Eurostarch SA, a
wholly owned subsidiary of CIP (24,000,000 shares).

Eurostarch SA no longer has a notifiable interest in the share capital of Tate
& Lyle PLC.

The interest of CIP in the share capital of Tate & Lyle PLC remains unchanged
at 9.98 per cent.
