Tate & Lyle PLC was informed on 20 June 2001 that The Capital Group Companies,
Inc., and its affiliates, which include Capital Guardian Trust Company,
Capital International Limited, Capital International S.A. and Capital
International, Inc. now hold 58,127,026 Ordinary shares in Tate & Lyle PLC
which is a notifiable interest under Section 198 of the Companies Act 1985,
being 12.07 per cent. of the nominal value of the relevant share capital,
increased from their holding on 5 December 2000 of  57,130,937 Ordinary shares
which was then 11.86  per cent. of the nominal value of the relevant share
capital.
