Telford Millennium Community
English Partnerships, the National Regeneration Agency, announced yesterday:
The development of a Millennium Community at East Ketley, Telford, has moved an
important step forward with the announcement of Taylor Woodrow as the preferred
development partner by project sponsors English Partnerships and the Borough of
Telford and Wrekin.
A collaborative design workshop and community consultation programme is underway
at East Ketley and the project partners will be working with Taylor Woodrow,
alongside local residents to produce a masterplan by the Autumn. Infrastructure
works are also expected to commence later this year.
Peter Murray, English Partnerships' Area Director, commented: 'We were very
pleased with the quality of the submissions we received from a shortlist of five
national developers. Taylor Woodrow was chosen because its proposals most
closely matched our vision for Telford Millennium Community, which is part of
the exemplar Millennium Communities Programme.
'From the outset their approach has dovetailed with our ambitions for East
Ketley and we were particularly impressed with their innovative and
comprehensive approach to the challenges set by the development brief for the
site.'
Charles Smith, cabinet member at the Borough of Telford and Wrekin added: 'The
Telford Millennium Community is attracting national interest as a unique way of
creating new communities. This is a major development and it was very important
that in awarding this prestigious contract we were able to select a partner
which was able to deliver against stringent criteria.
'We want to create a community which is sustainable and environmentally
sensitive and which increases social inclusion and participation. It's a
challenging brief which we are confident that as a partnership we are able to
deliver.'
'We are delighted to have been selected on this important development,' said
Iain Napier, Chief Executive of Taylor Woodrow plc. 'We are committed to working
closely with English Partnerships, the Borough of Telford and Wrekin, local
people and stakeholder groups.
Our joint aim will be to develop proposals for a community that sets new
standards on all fronts and ultimately creates a sustainable environment that
everyone will be extremely proud of. We have a unique skills base of integrated
housing, property and construction expertise which ensures that we are
particularly well equipped to tackle mixed use schemes such as this, and we
welcome the opportunity to work in true partnership.'
East Ketley Millennium Community is a 35 hectare brownfield site close to
Telford Town Centre, owned jointly by English Partnerships and the Borough of
Telford and Wrekin. The proposed development is likely to comprise up to 800 new
homes, a new primary school, local shops, recreation, community and health
services.
