T CLARKE REPORTS STRONG START TO
THE CURRENT YEAR
Speaking at today's Annual General Meeting, Russell Race, Chairman of T.
Clarke plc, ('T. Clarke') the Electrical engineering and contracting company,
made the following comments,
' 2000 marked a year of further progress for the Group, with turnover up 28%,
23% on a like-for-like basis, and net profit up by 8% to £4.8 million. This
was achieved despite certain exceptional costs and also a reduction in
interest receivable. The final quarter saw an encouraging, and expected, cash
inflow and the December balance was just under £9 million, well ahead of the
1999 year end figure. The Board is pleased to be recommending a further
appreciable increase in the final dividend bringing the total dividend for the
year to 15.5 pence per share, 27% up on last year.'
Commenting on the Group's current position, he said,
' We continue to enjoy buoyant conditions in our industry, with the
prospective workloads of some departments extending well into 2002. I stressed
in our annual report our increased emphasis on negotiated contracts and risk
management, this continues to be a main focus of attention.
' The Board reviewed the figures for the first quarter of the current year
this morning and I am pleased to report to you that there was a further
satisfactory advance in turnover and, more importantly, operating profit
during the period to the end of March. Our financial position also
strengthened during the first quarter, which pushed forward our interest
receipts.
' There is as yet, no indication that the much talked about slow down in the
UK economy has impacted on our order book and, it should be remembered that
many of our larger contracts, especially in London and the South-East, are of
a long-term nature. We therefore view the prospects for the current year with
some optimism.
' With regard to the further development of the Group strategy, I am pleased
to announce that we are currently in negotiations to acquire a small
contracting business in the north west of England. We are hopeful of
completion by the end of the month and are confident that the Company will
prove complimentary to our Group activities.
' The basis of T. Clarke's success is the quality and loyalty of our employees
and customers and I am happy to pay tribute to the skills and commitment of
our staff at all levels. I am very privileged to have been asked to take over
as Chairman last year from Pat Stanborough and everything that I have seen
since has confirmed my initial view that this is a very fine company with an
excellent future.'
