                   TESCO APPOINTS NEW NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR


Tesco today announced the appointment of Ken Hydon as a non-executive Board
director.

Mr Hydon, 59, is the Financial Director of Vodafone Group where he has been on
the Board since 1985. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management
Accountants, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the
Association of Corporate Treasurers.

Welcoming the appointment, Tesco Chairman, John Gardiner said:

'We are delighted that Ken has joined the Tesco Board. His long experience at
Vodafone and professional knowledge will be a valuable asset to Tesco.'

Mr Hydon is also a non-executive director of Reckitt Benckiser. His appointment
to Tesco is effective from 23 February 2004. He will be a member of the Audit
Committee.
