NEW APPOINTMENT TO THE BOARD OF TESCO PLC
Patrick Cescau has been appointed as a Non-Executive Director to the Board of Tesco PLC. His appointment will take effect from 1 February 2009.
Patrick has been Group Chief Executive of Unilever plc since 2005. Prior to that he was Chairman of Unilever plc and Vice Chairman of Unilever NV, and has held the position of Group Finance Director and Foods Director. Patrick retired from Unilever on 1 January 2009. He has also been a non-executive director of Pearson plc since 2002. Patrick will be a member of the Audit and Remuneration Committees.
Welcoming the appointment, Tesco Chairman David Reid said:
'I am delighted that Patrick is joining the Tesco Board. He is highly esteemed in the business world and brings with him many years' experience of both developed and emerging markets. His international perspective and knowledge of consumer goods will be very valuable to our Board.'
NOTES FOR EDITORS:
Patrick has worked for Unilever since 1973, initially working in finance roles. He became Finance Director of Unilever Indonesia in 1986 and then led Unilever's business in Portugal, before returning to Indonesia as Chairman/CEO in 1991.
Patrick ran the Van den Bergh Foods and Lipton beverage and food businesses in the United States from 1995 to 1998, before becoming Group Finance Director in 1999 and Foods Director in 2001.
In 2004 Patrick took over from Niall Fitzgerald as executive Chairman of Unilever plc and Vice-Chairman of Unilever NV, before becoming Group Chief Executive in 2005 when the traditional dual leadership structure came to and end.
Patrick was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in January 2005. He is married with two children.
There is no other information required to be disclosed pursuant to LR 9.6.13R in respect of Mr Cescau.
