                   NEW APPOINTMENT TO THE BOARD OF TESCO PLC
                                       
              Veronique Morali to be appointed as Non-Executive Director

Veronique  Morali  will  be appointed to the Board of  Tesco  PLC  as  a  Non-
Executive Director on 18 September 2000.

Veronique  Morali  is  currently  Executive  Vice-President,  Chief  Operating
Officer   and  Director  of  Fimalac,  a  French  diversified  listed   group,
controlling  various international businesses with total sales  in  excess  of
£1bn with 10,000 employees.

There are no matters relating to Ms Morali which need to be disclosed pursuant
to Rule 16.4 of the Listing Rules.

Tesco Chairman, John Gardiner said:
