                         Appointment of Gerry Grimstone
                           As Non-Executive Director


F&C Smaller Companies PLC, is pleased to announce the appointment of Gerry
Grimstone as a Non-Executive Director with effect from 1st September 2002.

He has previously held a number of senior positions worldwide with Schroders,
the investment banking group, latterly as Vice Chairman.  Prior to this, he was
a senior civil servant with the Treasury and the Department of Health and Social
Security.  He is a non-executive director of Aggregate Industries plc, Candover
Investments plc and Dairy Crest Group plc, and is a member of the Tote Board and
the RAF Strike Command Management Board.
