Please note that Foreign & Colonial Smaller Companies PLC has today made two
purchases for cancellation totalling 250,000 ordinary shares.  Both batches were
purchased in the market at a price of 229 1/2p per share.

Following this purchase, the total number of ordinary shares in issue stands at 
100,231,319.
