TOPPS TILES PLC
Chairman's Statement at the Annual General Meeting
11 September 2001
At today's Annual General Meeting of Topps Tiles Plc, the Chairman, Stuart
Williams told shareholders:
'We are pleased to announce that trading has got off to a good start and gross
margins are steadily improving and expected to continue on an upward trend
throughout the new financial year. The growth in like-for-like sales for the
13 weeks to 7th September was 11% and overall sales growth, in the same
period, was 21.5%.
As a result of hard work, determination and a significant contribution to the
company, we are delighted to announce that Nick Ounstead will become Chief
Operating Officer with immediate effect. Nick will continue to oversee
customer services and marketing within this broader role. This will enable
our CEO, Barry Bester, to spend more time on strategic issues and new business
development.
Despite a downturn in the economic cycle we remain confident about the
prospects for the ceramic tile market and forecasts indicate that the market
will experience sustained growth.
Our expansion plans in the UK are on track, where our target is for a total of
over 350 outlets within the next five financial years. This year we plan to
open 24 new outlets around the country.
With a history of solid financial performance, coupled with growing market
share, brand awareness and profitability in an expanding market the company is
well placed to make further progress this year.'
