Tottenham Hotspur PLC 03 June 2004 Date: 3 June 2004 Enquiries: John Bick/Trevor Phillips, Holborn Tel: +44 (0) 20 7929 5599 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR APPOINT JACQUES SANTINI AS HEAD COACH (London, Thursday, 03 June 2004) Tottenham Hotspur Football Club have announced the appointment of Jacques Santini as Head Coach. Santini, currently in charge of the French national team, will join the Club after the European Championships in Portugal. Commented Chairman Daniel Levy: 'I am delighted that Jacques is joining the Club. He was the outstanding candidate because of his experience, coaching ability and track record at all levels. His arrival in addition to that of Frank Arnesen is the direct result of a comprehensive review of the football side of the Club. We now have a coaching set up in place that has experience in several different countries and an extensive knowledge of players across the world. 'As I have said on previous occasions, we were always going to make this appointment at the end of the European season as it was our aim to appoint a top European Coach. The Club and our fans have had to endure an unprecedented level of speculation regarding this appointment and this is undoubtedly due to the significant number of high calibre individuals who were interested in coming to Tottenham. The supporters have been very patient and for that I thank them. I hope that they now feel that their patience has been rewarded. With Jacques on board, an existing talented squad and further strengthening over the summer, we can now look forward to the start of next season with renewed optimism.' Tottenham Hotspur Sporting Director Frank Arnesen commented: 'Jacques has a wealth of experience both as a player and as a coach. He has won honours at both national and international level and his reputation in Europe and amongst other respected figures in the game is excellent. In my opinion he was by far and away the best candidate short-listed for the position and I am very happy that we have succeeded in bringing him to the Club.' Commenting on his appointment, Jacques Santini said: 'I am delighted to get the opportunity to join Tottenham Hotspur. I am an ambitious man and it has always been a dream of mine to coach a big English club in the most exciting league in the world. Tottenham Hotspur are a very big club, with a wonderful history and great traditions. Daniel and Frank have outlined their vision and I share their ambitions. I am determined to help the Club return to its place amongst the elite and look forward to joining after Euro 2004.' Ends Notes to editors 52 year-old Santini is currently preparing for Euro 2004. Since his appointment as the national coach in July 2002, France have lost only one of their 23 matches. They won the Confederations Cup in 2003 defeating Cameroon in the final and qualified for Euro 2004 in impressive style winning all of their group matches and conceding just two goals. Prior to his appointment as the national manager, Santini led French side Lyon to their first ever Championship in 2002. They also won the French Super Cup in the same season and the French League Cup the previous year. Santini has also gained a reputation for developing young players during his time as Lyon's technical director and a two-year spell at the renowned French Football Academy. A creative midfielder as a player, Santini was part of the famous St Etienne team of the seventies where he won four league titles, two French Cups and a European Cup runners-up medal.
