Transense Technologies plc
signs Licence Agreement with
Honeywell International Inc.
Transense Technologies plc ('Transense') has signed a Licence Agreement with
Honeywell International Inc. ('Honeywell'), one of the world's leading
manufacturers of pressure sensors. Under terms of the confidential Agreement,
Transense will receive a licence fee and a royalty on each package sold that
incorporates the Company's Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) technology.
Initially, Honeywell will concentrate its packaging expertise on the volume
production of packaged SAW sensing devices developed specifically for tyre
pressure and temperature monitoring. It is envisaged that the first batch of
these devices will be shipped to an application licensee in the next three
months. The start of volume sales production of packaged sensor products is
expected in the last quarter of this year.
Jim Perry, Chief Executive of Transense, said last night: 'This makes the fourth
Licence Agreement Transense has entered into for its tyre pressure monitoring
technology. Last year Michelin, the largest tyre manufacturer in the world
signed an exclusive licence with us for embedding sensors in tyres. In 2000, 3DM
signed up for embedding sensors in wheels and in the previous year SmarTire, a
leader in monitoring systems incorporating batteries, entered into a Licence
Agreement because they believed that Transense's tyre pressure technology was
the best option for the future.'
'We never anticipated that our technology would be in the first, or second, wave
of tyre pressure monitoring devices on the market, which would be battery
systems. What we have developed is a sensor that does not require batteries,
some of which are toxic and difficult to dispose of and which have disadvantages
of cost and performance. Systems using our technologies lend themselves to being
better than anything in the market place today.'
'The involvement of Honeywell, with whom we have been working for some time,
shows that our battery-less tyre pressure technology is now near to volume
production and scheduled to start this year. We are determined to make Transense
a global force in automotive passive sensor technology and, by forging a
relationship with Honeywell, and other major companies, I have no doubt that our
strategic aim of becoming the world leader in automotive sensors will be
realised.'
'In addition to tyre pressure measurement, our sensor systems lend themselves to
many other automotive applications such as electric power steering, where we
already have a partnership with TT electronics plc, whose sensors go into 50% of
all cars produced. Our tyre pressure sensors can talk to our steering and other
sensors, which will give us a further lead in this rapidly growing market
sector.'
'When the other licence agreements which are currently being negotiated are
eventually signed, it will become clear that we are not alone in the belief that
our patented technology will be leading edge in many other applications.'
