Tim Stevenson to Become Chairman of Travis Perkins
Tony Travis, 58, chairman of leading builders' merchant Travis Perkins plc,
has decided to retire from the board on 31 October this year. He will be
succeeded as chairman on 1 November by Tim Stevenson, 53, who joins the board
with immediate effect. Mr Stevenson, who will be non-executive chairman, was
previously chief executive of Burmah Castrol PLC, a position he relinquished
in August last year after Burmah Castrol was acquired by BP plc.
Mr Travis is retiring after 36 years on the board during which time he has
played an integral part in the development of the company. At the end of 1999
he stepped down as chief executive and Frank McKay, recruited from Blue
Circle, took over the role. He will continue for a limited period to act as a
consultant on certain strategic matters.
Commenting, Tony Travis said today: 'I am delighted that Tim Stevenson has
joined the board and is succeeding me as chairman. He brings with him a
wealth of business experience and a fine track record. I warmly welcome Tim
to the board. He will find a progressive business and a strong management
team led by Frank McKay. I have every confidence that in their hands the
Company will continue to prosper.'
Tim Stevenson joins Travis Perkins after a long and distinguished career with
Burmah Castrol where he had been chief executive from 1998 until August last
year following the acquisition of the company by BP. He joined Burmah
Castrol in 1975 and went on to hold a series of key appointments in the group
culminating in the position of chief executive in 1998. He was appointed to
the main board in 1993 and was chief executive of Lubricants Group for five
years prior to becoming chief executive of the parent company. He is a
non-executive director of National Express plc.
