           Appointments of Managing Directors at Wickes and Benchmarx


Following Richard Bird's planned and gradual withdrawal from his role as
Managing Director of Wickes, the board has been working on succession and
further development of the Group's senior management resources.

The board is delighted to now be able to announce the promotion of two of the
Group's senior executives to two very significant roles for our development:

- Jeremy Bird - Managing Director of Wickes, and Director, Wickes Limited

- Rob Gladwin - Managing Director of Benchmarx

Jeremy Bird is steeped in Wickes experience and has successfully spent the last
year in the role of Group Marketing Director, where he has primarily been
responsible for driving our Brand Bulls eye work. In this role he has acquired a
broad understanding of the Group's strategy and culture. This, combined with
Jeremy's vision, drive and grounding in Wickes, means he is ideally qualified to
take Wickes into its next phase of development and growth. Jeremy becomes a
member of the Group's Executive Committee.

Rob Gladwin is currently Retail Director of Wickes, where he has been
responsible for a significant improvement in our organisational capabilities and
processes in retail operations. In addition, he has been responsible for
directing the launch phase of our new venture, Benchmarx. This has enabled him
to develop a unique skill set of considerable retail experience and a great
understanding and working knowledge of the trade channels. This is an ideal
blend of skills for developing and driving our new business venture of
Benchmarx.

Both Jeremy and Rob will report directly to John Carter, Chief Operating
Officer.

Although both Jeremy's and Rob's promotions are effective from today, Rob will
assist the smooth handover of current activities within Wickes, taking up his
full time role within Benchmarx by the end of September.

Jeremy's current responsibilities as Group Marketing Director and those of Rob
as Retail Director of Wickes will be absorbed by other Executive Committee and
Trading Board Members.
