Strategic Agreement with HSS

Tribal Group PLC 18 April 2005 Tribal Group plc 18 April 2005 TRIBAL GROUP ANNOUNCES STRATEGIC AGREEMENT WITH NEW YORK'S HOSPITAL FOR SPECIAL SURGERY Tribal Group plc ('Tribal') and the Hospital for Special Surgery ('HSS'), New York's leading orthopaedic hospital, today announce the signing of a strategic agreement to underline their commitment to the delivery of healthcare in the UK. The alliance will see HSS supporting Tribal Group's wholly owned subsidiary, Mercury Health, in the development of its treatment centre business and in bidding for the second wave of NHS contracts. The agreement includes the provision by HSS of advisory services and best practice, as well as the transfer of knowledge in the area of orthopaedics. This transfer of knowledge will be supported by an exchange programme between Mercury Health staff and HSS staff. The key focal areas of the agreement are patient education, advice on care pathways, infection control and physiotherapy. HSS will also provide access to operating processes and protocols, as well as clinical operating data. HSS Chief Executive Officer and President, John Reynolds, who has previously overseen the knowledge transfer of HSS's best practices in patient care and treatment protocols for hip and knee replacements to a NHS orthopaedic centre in London, will lead the HSS team working with and advising Mercury Health. The strategic agreement follows a £214 million contract win by Mercury Health in December 2004 to design, set up and manage a regional network of five treatment centres in the South of England. These new treatment centres will perform a range of in-patient and daycase elective surgery and diagnostic procedures for non-acute conditions. Henry Pitman, Chief Executive of Tribal, said: 'The strategic agreement with HSS enhances the capabilities of our healthcare business, Mercury Health, in the delivery of elective surgery and diagnostic procedures in the UK. By working together, we are even better placed to bid for the second wave of NHS contracts.' John Reynolds, Chief Executive Officer of HSS, said: 'At HSS, we perform more than 16,000 orthopaedic surgeries a year. We have developed protocols that improve patient outcomes and simultaneously decrease the length of patient stays and reduce costs. We expect to develop a dialogue around these ideas in the course of this programme and look forward to working with Mercury Health and Tribal Group.'
