Retirement of non-executive director

Provident Financial plc announces that Peter A Davis will retire from the
board with effect from 13 July 2000.

At the date of his retirement, he will have completed two three-year terms as
a non-executive director of the company which is the maximum period allowed
under the company's corporate governance policy.

The board would like to extend its thanks to Peter Davis for his contribution
to the development of the company during the last six years.
