LORD MACLAURIN SUCCEEDS SAM GINN AS CHAIRMAN OF VODAFONE AIRTOUCH PLC
Vodafone AirTouch Plc ('the Company') announces today that Lord
MacLaurin has been elected as Chairman of the Company following
the resignation of Sam Ginn. Paul Hazen was also elected as a
Deputy Chairman and the Senior non-Executive Director of the
Company.
Sam Ginn became Chairman on 30 June 1999 when the merger between
Vodafone and AirTouch was completed. He was previously Chairman
and Chief Executive of AirTouch Communications Inc.
Lord MacLaurin joined the Board of Vodafone Group Plc in January 1997
as a non-Executive Director and was elected Chairman in 1998.
When the merger between Vodafone and AirTouch was completed in
June 1999, he stepped down to become Deputy Chairman of the
combined Group. Lord MacLaurin was appointed to the Board of
Tesco Plc in 1970 and he became Chairman of Tesco in 1985, a
position he held until his retirement in 1997.
Paul Hazen was appointed to the Board of Vodafone AirTouch in June
1999. He is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Wells Fargo
and Company and Wells Fargo Bank.
Charles Schwab has resigned from the Board. The Board thanks him for
his contribution to the Company.
Commenting on the changes, Chris Gent Chief Executive of Vodafone
AirTouch said, 'Sam Ginn committed himself to the successful
integration of AirTouch into Vodafone AirTouch. That process
has now been completed successfully. I thank him for his
contribution to the integration of the two companies and the
advice and counsel he provided as Chairman of the Board, and I
wish him well in the future. Ian MacLaurin's re-appointment as
Chairman is excellent news and this will provide his wealth of
experience throughout many areas of business and a degree of
continuity through the current period of significant growth and
change. This will undoubtedly be a major advantage for the
Company.'
Lord MacLaurin added, 'Vodafone AirTouch is an exciting and fast-
growing business. I am very pleased to be invited to become
Chairman. I intend to devote a substantial amount of my working
time to the Company, and I look forward to playing an active
role to achieve the Company's considerable potential and
continued success in the future.'
