NEW KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS FOR VODAFONE
Vodafone Group Plc ('Vodafone') today announces new key performance
indicators, as a better guide to the underlying trends in its business.
The first output from this new analysis for the quarter ended March 2001
shows that in Vodafone's controlled subsidiaries the total inactive customer
base was 10%. This comprises contract activity levels of 94% and prepaid
activity levels of 88%. Vodafone's major networks in Germany, Italy and the
UK registered inactivity levels of 13%, 7%, and 12% respectively. The German
level of 13% includes contract inactivity of 11% which is unusually high, as
Germany is one of the few markets that currently operate two year contracts.
Without the impact of eliminating inactive customers, average revenue per
user ('ARPU') decline from September 2000, based on a 12 month rolling
average and excluding handset and connection fees, to 31 March 2001 was 22%
in Germany, 8% in Italy and 4% in the UK. The relatively high number in
Germany arises from the exceptionally strong customer growth of lower
spending prepaid customers, where in the last year D2 Vodafone experienced an
effective three year growth of customers in one single year, dramatically
changing the mix of the customer base. The 8% decline in Italy can partly be
attributed to the effect of the reduction in fixed to mobile interconnect.
The moderate decline of only 4% in the UK reflects the higher level of
contract customer acquisitions in the year partially offsetting the high
percentage of new prepaid acquisitions.
Indicative information shows that the level of inactivity has increased in
Vodafone's major markets and therefore the headline decline in registered
ARPU is overstated. As Vodafone implements this new data collection process
it will be able to report, on a quarterly basis, on these comparative trends
which it expects will confirm the real level of ARPU.
In addition, Vodafone reports data revenues as a percentage of service
revenues for its controlled subsidiaries. This reached 8.1% in the year to
March 2001, split 7.7% for messaging and 0.4% for internet. In the month of
March this figure was 9.3% split 8.8% and 0.5% respectively. For the Group on
a proportionate basis, including associates, the corresponding figure was
6.2% in the year and 7.0% in the month of March.
Chris Gent, Chief Executive of Vodafone said: 'We believe this data gives
valuable guidance to investors and we hope the industry in general will
follow our lead. We are pleased by progress in data in our controlled
subsidiaries which reached 8.1% in the year and 9.3% in the month of March.
This progress leads us to be confident of achieving our target of 20%-25% of
service revenues coming from data by 2004. We also believe the underlying
trends on revenue per customer are encouraging.'
Vodafone will continue to update investors on this progress each quarter.
Further key performance indicators will be included in the announcement of
the preliminary results on 29 May 2001.
