                             PURCHASE OF OWN SHARES


WCWB announces that, in accordance with the authority granted by shareholders at
the Annual General Meeting held on 12 July 2002, it purchased in the market for
cancellation 35,000 of its Ordinary Shares of 20p each on 9 January 2003 at a
price of 89p per share. Following cancellation, there will be 10,133,654
Ordinary Shares of 20p each in WCWB in issue.
