Wärtsilä Corporation, Press release, 28 September 2009 at 10 am (EET)
Wärtsilä has signed the United Nations Global Compact initiative and
has been registered as a participant by the UN Global Compact Office.
With this action Wärtsilä further consolidates its commitment to
sustainable business practices, and to the compact's underlying
principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and
anti-corruption.
"We wanted to express our support for the UN Global Compact
initiative, because we share the same values which it promotes. We
believe that participation in the UN Global Compact will support our
long-term efforts to develop our products and operations in a
sustainable way. Our business and operations in 70 countries provide
an excellent platform for us to continue taking these principles
forward," says Ole Johansson, President and CEO of Wärtsilä
Corporation.
Wärtsilä's Code of Conduct and sustainability programmes are well in
line with the ten principles of the UN Global Compact. Sustainability
has long been at the top of Wärtsilä's business agenda, not only in
terms of product development, but also in the company's way of
working. By participating in the initiative, Wärtsilä emphasises the
importance of business responsibility and furthers its commitment to
active development of sustainability management and performance.
The UN Global Compact is the world's largest corporate responsibility
initiative with over 5,000 business participants in 135 countries.
