Fidelity International Limited of Bermuda ('Fidelity') and FMR Corp notified The
Weir Group PLC ('the Company') on 20 August 2004 that their material interest
now totalled a holding of 14,934,076 ordinary shares in the Company representing
7.30% of the Company's issued share capital as detailed in the table below, and
that such notification also comprised the interest of Edward C. Johnson III as a
principal shareholder of Fidelity and FMR Corp.

The notification of change is due to a purchase of 2,644,620 ordinary shares.
Percentage holdings are calculated using an issued share capital of 204,550,200
ordinary shares of GBP0.125.
