JD WETHERSPOON PLC
First Quarter Sales and Pub Openings
In view of frequent requests for information relating to sales and pub openings
from the media, analysts and shareholders, an update will be issued in future at
the end of the first and third quarters of our financial years.
Sales in the thirteen weeks to 31 October 1999 (the first quarter of our
financial year) increased by £27.2 million to £83.9 million, an increase of 48
per cent. compared to the previous year. Our established pubs showed like for
like sales increases of 18 per cent. Like for like sales have been helped by a
relatively subdued comparative period and are expected to slow in the rest of
the financial year.
As planned, we opened 20 new pubs in the first quarter bringing the total number
to 347.
