Pre Year-End Trading Update
Current trading
For the first 11 weeks (to 10 July 2005) of the final quarter, like-for-like
sales decreased by 0.4%, resulting in a year to date like-for-like sales
decrease of 0.5%. Like-for-like sales for the first 7 weeks of the final quarter
decreased by 1.8% (in line with the third quarter) but turned positive during
the following 3 weeks, when the comparison was with Euro 2004. Total company
sales increased by 2.6% to £172.8 million for the 11 weeks (to 10 July 2005) and
by 3.0% to £779.0 million in the year to date.
Property
We have opened a total of 13 pubs in the year to 24 July 2005. Progress
continues to be made on the pubs previously identified for disposal.
Non-smoking pubs
As at the 14 July 2005, we have a total of 25 non-smoking pubs. We intend to
convert approximately a further 30 pubs to non-smoking by this Christmas, as set
out in the attached list.
Outlook
The Board currently expects the result for the year to 24 July 2005 to be in
line with market expectations.
The company currently intends to announce its preliminary results on 2 September
2005.
