PRESS RELEASE
Third Quarter Sales and Pub Openings
Total sales in the third quarter of our financial year, covering the thirteen
weeks to 27th April 2003, rose by £33.7 million to £186.6 million, an increase
of 22% compared to the previous year. The year to date sales for the 39 weeks to
27th April 2003 were £537.2 million, 23% ahead of the previous year.
Like-for-like sales in the quarter increased by 3.5% bringing the year to date
position to 4.3%. Like-for-like sales for February, as previously reported, were
4.9% followed by 3.2% in March and 2.6% in April.
In line with our expectations, thirteen pubs have opened so far in the second
half of the financial year, bringing the total number this year to 34 and the
overall number of pubs to 641.
Margins and Outlook
Margins in the third quarter were broadly in line with the same period a year
ago and ahead of the first half of the current financial year. We thus remain
confident of future prospects.
