Like-for-like sales growth
13 weeks to June 3rd, 2004 FY 2003/4
Marriott 6.0% (0.2%)
Travel Inn 5.9% 3.6%
Pub restaurants 0.5% 2.2%
High street restaurants 3.3% 3.1%
David Lloyd Leisure 5.0% 5.2%
David Thomas, chief executive, said: 'Whitbread's brands have continued to
perform well. Marriott is now achieving healthy growth although in this quarter
it has benefited from comparison with the depressed London market of a year ago.
'In contrast the restaurant brands' performance was set against a strong period
last year and was affected adversely by the temporary closure of pub restaurants
for conversion to the successful new format.
'The excellent sales results achieved by Travel Inn reflect the brand's
increasing consumer appeal while David Lloyd Leisure's like-for-like sales
growth of 5% confirmed its leadership of its sector.
'Whitbread's board remains confident of further good progress in the current
financial year and beyond, in terms of organic growth, of the group's market
leading leisure brands, operating performance and more efficient use of
shareholders' property assets'
