Trading Statement

WHITEBREAD PLC 9 September 1999 WHITBREAD TRADING STATEMENT David Thomas, Chief Executive, said: 'Since the start of the financial year trading has been in line with our expectations. 'The Whitbread Beer Company once again increased turnover with a further strong performance from Stella Artois. Whitbread Pub Partnerships has demonstrated the value of a well run leased pub company by continuing to grow profit per pub. Whitbread Inns again grew sales per pub. Inns like-for-like sales are still negative but on an improving trend. 'Restaurants, in common with other retailers, continue to feel the effects of lower consumer expenditure. In May we said it would take some time before returning consumer confidence was reflected in greater spending and that is proving the case. Costa Coffee, however, is seeing strong like-for-like growth. 'In hotels, the Marriott and Travel Inn brands are continuing to show improved yields per room and both enjoy a premium to their respective markets. Like-for-like sales in David Lloyd Leisure's mature clubs continue to be positive. 'I remain confident about the competitive position of our brands although, as yet, we are receiving little help from an improvement in market conditions.'
