Whitbread PLC - Transaction in own shares

Whitbread PLC announces that on 21 December 2005 it purchased 57,829 of its
ordinary shares at an average price of 941.3984 pence per ordinary share.

The purchased shares will all be held as treasury shares. Following the above
purchase, Whitbread PLC holds 904,039 ordinary shares as treasury shares. The
total number of ordinary shares in issue (excluding shares held as treasury
shares) is 256,825,521.
