Whitbread PLC - Transaction in own shares

Whitbread PLC announces that on 25 January 2006 it purchased 68,154 of its
ordinary shares at an average price of 1023.62 pence per ordinary share.

The purchased shares will all be held as treasury shares. Following the above
purchase, Whitbread PLC holds 1,002,953 ordinary shares as treasury shares. The
total number of ordinary shares in issue (excluding shares held as treasury
shares) is 257,287,330.
