£40m Contract Win
Wincanton plc ('Wincanton' or the 'Group'), the leading European supply chain solutions provider, is pleased to announce it has been awarded a three year, £40m contract with Argos to become the supplier of the retailer's primary inbound UK supply chain.
This win builds on a 13-year partnership with existing warehousing and transport operations at seven locations in the UK, and highlights the Group's growth progress in the container logistics sector following two acquisitions during the past eighteen months.
As part of the agreement, Wincanton will utilise both its own vehicle fleet as well as Argos's own inter-distribution centre ('inter DC') trunking fleet to manage circa 35,000 inbound container movements per annum for the retailer.
The joint Argos/Wincanton team will be responsible for the planning and implementation of port to distribution centre container movements, and inter DC trunking scheduling.
By optimising Argos's existing fleet and drivers, Wincanton will generate considerable cost savings for Argos, as well as reduce the retailer's environmental impact by minimising empty vehicles on the road and further reducing congestion. Wincanton will also be project managing the IT infrastructure supporting the migration from traffic onto rail where possible, again to minimise CO2 emissions.
Graeme McFaull, Wincanton Chief Executive commented:
'We are delighted to have been awarded such an important contract, which reinforces our belief in the importance of outstanding service and absolute commitment to our customers. Our innovative approach for Argos will not only maximise operational efficiencies for the Group but also minimise the environmental impact of servicing a high volume supply chain.'
