                              PRE-CLOSE SEASON UPDATE

Wincanton plc today issues the following pre-close season update for the six
months ending 30 September 2004:

'Further progress has been made in the first half in creating a stronger
platform for future growth.

In the UK & Ireland, a combination of successful contract start-ups and business
wins with both new and existing customers has reinforced our position as a
market leader.  Recent wins include a new automated warehouse for an existing
customer.

In Continental Europe, our profit improvement programme continues to underpin
progress.  Increasing recognition of our national, regional and pan-European
capabilities is contributing to higher levels of new business activity.

Although our markets remain highly competitive, we expect our performance for
the year to 31 March 2005 to be in line with expectations.'
