Xeros XFiltra rated best laundry microparticle filter
Xeros Technology Group plc (AIM: XSG, 'Xeros', 'the Group'), the developer and provider of water saving and filtration technologies with multiple commercial and domestic applications, is pleased to announce that XFiltraTM, the Company's filtration technology designed to prevent the release of microplastics from laundry, has been independently verified by scientists at the University of Plymouth as being a leading device for reducing microplastic pollution released from washing machines.
Xeros' in-machine filtration technology, XFiltra, was tested at the University's Marine Litter Research Institute, alongside products from other companies to measure their relative effectiveness at capturing microfibres, released from clothes during wash cycles, and preventing their subsequent release in wastewater.
The published data states that XFiltra performed significantly better than all other products evaluated. The tests, which were designed to capture microfibres in a mixed wash of synthetic and synthetic/cotton blend garments, show that XFiltra captured 78% of microfibres released during each wash cycle.
Similar tests conducted by Xeros on purely synthetic garments, under independently verified protocols, show that XFiltra captures over 90% of the microplastic fibres released from them.
The University of Plymouth test data has been peer reviewed and is published today in the journal Science of The Total Environment.
Around 500,000 tonnes of microplastics flow into the world's oceans every year from washing clothes and textiles containing synthetic fibres, accounting for 35% of all primary microplastics entering the ocean[1].
Mark Nichols , CEO Xeros commented: "The pollution of our rivers and oceans with discarded plastic waste is happening at an alarming rate. It's harming wildlife and our precious and finely balanced ecosystems, with microplastics from washing our clothes being a significant source of contamination.
"XFiltra was developed with the objective of eliminating this form of pollution and with the belief that every household and commercial washing machine needs to be fitted with low cost, easy to use filtration.
"We're delighted that the efficiency of our filtration technology has now been confirmed by independent researchers as a world leading solution which provides every washing machine manufacturer with the ability to make a major contribution to the sustainability of garment lifecycles and our planet."

Notes to Editors
Xeros Technology Group plc develops and licenses platform technologies which transform the sustainability, performance and economics of water intensive industrial and commercial processes.
Xeros' patented XOrb™ technologies significantly reduce the amount of water used in the dyeing, finishing or laundering of soft substrates such as garments and fabrics. They enable the remaining water to become far more efficient and effective in either affixing or removing molecules, the result being improvements in economic, operational, product and sustainability outcomes. The Group is applying its technology in the fields of apparel manufacturing, tanning and commercial and domestic laundry.
Xeros' XDrum™ technology is a patented, simple, low cost machine drum design which enables XOrbs to be introduced into and subsequently removed from process cycles in Xeros' chosen fields. The design provides Original Equipment Manufacturers ('OEMs') with the ability to make simple and low-cost changes in their products to incorporate the Company's XOrb technology.
The Group has signed multiple license agreements for its XDrum and XOrb products in major commercial and domestic markets.
XFiltra™ is a proprietary in-machine filtration technology which prevents harmful microplastics, generated during washing cycles, from being released into the world's river and oceans. Microplastics released from synthetic clothing during laundering is one of the largest sources of primary microplastic pollution entering oceans every year.
