Chairman's Statement

Young & Co's Brewery PLC 18 July 2000 YOUNG & CO.'S BREWERY, P.L.C. Chairman's AGM Trading Statement In his statement to shareholders at today's AGM, John Young, Chairman of Young & Co's Brewery PLC made the following comments about current trading: 'Trading during the first 13 weeks has been encouraging, with beer volumes ahead of the same period last year, mainly due to the brewing contracts which we secured last year. Production of our own beers has held up well considering the poor summer weather. We are encouraged by the strong early sales of Triple 'A' our new mid- gravity ale, which is already establishing itself as a popular addition to our product range in our own pubs and is making considerable headway in the free trade. 'We have recently completed the refurbishment and opening of our latest Finch's bar in Wimbledon, where trading during the Wimbledon fortnight has been exceptional. We have also almost completed the refurbishment of two of our pub hotels, the Pope's Grotto and the Greyhound, and the bars are now open and trading well. These two sites add a further 53 rooms to our estate making a total of 282 beds and continue our strategy of seeking to maximise returns from existing assets. We continue to pursue opportunities for expanding our retail estate and anticipate further acquisitions, refurbishments and new openings during the course of the year. 'Whilst it is still very early in our financial year to be predicting the outcome for the year as a whole, particularly in the absence of any sign of when summer might arrive, we are confident that the continued implementation of our strategy will enable Young's to make further progress in the year ahead.'
