The Company was notified on 6 August 2003, by Schroder Investment Management
Limited ('Schroder IM'), that Schroder IM is currently interested in 4,417,325
of the Company's ordinary 5p shares ('Ordinary Shares'). This holding represents
12.18 per cent. of the Company's issued Ordinary Share capital.


2,475,713 Ordinary Shares are registered in the name of the Mineworkers' Pension
Scheme (client) Nominees Limited a/c R and 1,941,612 Ordinary Shares are
registered in the name of British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme Nominees
Limited a/c P.


The notification by Schroder IM is made in respect of its interest as investment
managers and on behalf of Schroders plc which, being the holding company of
Schroder IM, is treated as having an interest in all of the above Ordinary
Shares.
