Smith & Nephew Plc (SN.) is a British multinational medical equipment manufacturing company, listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) and a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
The company was founded in 1856 by Thomas James Smith in Kingston upon Hull, England. Originally a dispensing chemist, the business became known as T. J. Smith and Nephew after Thomas Smith's nephew, Horatio Nelson Smith, joined a few months before Thomas's death in 1896.
Over the years, Smith & Nephew has grown into an international producer of advanced wound management products, arthroscopy products, trauma and clinical therapy products, and orthopaedic reconstruction products. Its products are sold in over 100 countries.
Smith & Nephew's enduring presence on the LSEG testifies to its significant role in the global medical equipment industry.
