Anglo American PLC, known as AAL on the London Stock Exchange (LSE), is a British multinational mining company. Founded in 1917 by Ernest Oppenheimer in Johannesburg, South Africa, Anglo American started as a gold mining company with financial backing from the American bank J.P. Morgan & Co. and £1 million raised from UK and US sources. The company's name reflects this fact.
Over the years, Anglo American has grown into one of the world's largest producers of platinum, with around 40% of world output. It is also a major producer of diamonds, copper, nickel, iron ore, polyhalite, and steelmaking coal. The company has operations in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.
AAL share price listed on LSE at 737p in 1999.
